Electrical Installation Condition Report - EICR

Electrical Installation Condition Report Amendment 3

What is the Electrical Installation Condition Report?

The EICR is a document used in reporting on the condition of an existing electrical installation.

Reporting is based on the process called Periodic Inspection and Testing. It must be done on regular basis in accordance with BS 7671. The EICR is replacing the old Periodic Inspection Report (PIR) which is not in use anymore.

The frequency of inspection

The frequency of periodic inspection and testing depends on factors such as:
- the type of the electrical installation
- its use and operation
- the frequency and quality of maintenance
- external influences to which it is subjected.

BS 7671 provides a detailed table on recommended frequencies for periodic inspection and testing of electrical installations. For example, a domestic installation is recommended to be inspected and tested every 10 years or on change of occupancy. A typical commercial installation should be done in 5 years or on change of occupancy.

To be valid the EICR must be accompanied by a:
- the Schedule of Inspections
- the Schedule of Test Results.

The original document must be given to the "person ordering the work" and a copy should be kept by the electrician who completed the inspection and testing process.

The new observation codes:

Code C1 - Danger Present (Old PIR Code 1- Requires Urgent Attention)
Code C2 - Potentially Dangerous (Old PIR Code 2- Requires Improvement)
Code C3 - Improvement Recommended (Old PIR Code 3- Requires further investigation)
The old PIR Code 4 "Does not comply with BS 7671:2008" is no longer in use.

BS 7671 18th Edition changes

With the release of the 18th Edition of The Wiring Regulations significant changes and additions have been introduced to the EICR. The downloadable form bellow is now in accordance with these changes
